Netscape bows to pressure, will bring back standalone Navigator

Netscape Communications will separate the Navigator Web browser from its Communicator suite due to overwhelming customer demand. The Navigator 4.0 release is expected to include the Netcaster Webtop component and debut later this quarter.

Mike Homer, Netscape's executive vice president, acknowledged that most users didn't appreciate the huge Communicator download since they were only using the browser. "Some \[users\] only need a browser." The full download of Communicator 4.0 requires an 18MB download. Navigator 3.03, in contrast, is only 3 MB. Sources indicate the 4.0 Navigator may require about 5 MB.

I, for one, salute this move. I have absolutely no use for the other components in the Communicator suite and welcome Netscape's decision
