Microsoft: Windows 98 sales beat expectations

Microsoft Corporation is "astounded" at the success of Windows 98, according to sources inside the company. Weeks after its release, Windows 98 is outselling Windows 95 during a similar time period when Win 95 was released in 1995.

"Sales \[of Windows 98\] continue to exceed our expectations, and our customers seem to be very satisfied with their purchase," said CompUSA VP Larry Mondry.

Windows 98 was widely expected to be a sleeper in the retail channel, though sales of the OS will surpass 100 million within a year because it will be bundled with over 90% of new computers.
