Microsoft testing new Internet 'portal'

Microsoft began a public beta test of a new Web site that will unify the three existing "portal" sites it now maintains. A portal site--like Yahoo, Netscape Netcaster, or Microsoft's existing "Start" sites--provide users with a one-stop homepage that they can customize. Microsoft's new portal site, which will retain the "Start" title, will be finalized by the end of the year. It includes a sleeker look, free email via the Microsoft HotMail service, easy search engine access, and all kinds of news feeds.
