Microsoft releases public Site Server 3.0 beta

Microsoft has made Site Server 3.0 Beta 1, and Site Server 3.0 Commerce Edition Beta 1 available for free download from the its Web site. Site Server 3.0 features three areas of new functionality, including publishing, searching, and content delivery. Using Site Server 3.0, Web content creators can submit content via a secure drag and drop interface. Push, personalization, and membership features make it easy to deliver relevant information to users in an appropriate manner. Commerce Edition includes all of the features of the Standard Edition and adds advanced commerce capabilities, including Microsoft Market (a sample commerce site), an ad server, and enhanced commerce site authoring wizards.

The Site Server 3.0 betas expire on June 30, 1998, though they will be refreshed periodically before the final product is released. They require you to be running Windows NT 4.0, Service Pack 3, and the Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack. The full install of Site Server 3.0 is a 70 MB download, while the full download of Site Server Commerce Edition 3.0 is about 85 MB.
