Microsoft Corporation released the first beta of its upcoming Service Pack 5 for Windows NT 4.0 to 500 beta testers this week, opening speculation about what fixes the new SP will add. Microsoft says, however, that SP5 won't be the kitchen-sink release that SP4 was and probably won't be essential for most users.
Windows NT 4.0 SP5 will include a single Year-2000 fix that's already available as a post-SP4 hot-fix, Dial-up Networking fixes, System Preparation Utility fixes, setup and installation fixes, and a variety of other post-SP4 fixes. There's no word yet on the estimated timetable for this release
