Although Microsoft has publicly stated that it has no plans to alter the monolithic structure of the massive Office 97 suite, the Redmond company is quietly developing an all-Java version of Office. According to TechWeb, "Microsoft is working on a 'light' version of Office for Java," said a source familiar with the development effort. "They don't want to be two years behind, so they've started developing it now."
Microsoft won't ship the Java Office unless competitor's products--like Corel WordPerfect Office for Java--are successful. Corel's Java Office will ship next Monday
