LTO Hits Milestone

As of February 2002, the Linear Tape-Open (LTO) backup format, which Hewlett-Packard (HP), IBM, and Seagate Technology developed and support, has shipped 2 million LTO Ultrium format tape-data cartridges. Products based on the Ultrium format have been available since September 2000. Ultrium cartridges hit the 1 million-shipped mark within 12 months of release.

The Ultrium format is the latest version of the LTO backup technology. The first generation of the format supports 200GB of compressed capacity per cartridge or 100GB native. DLTtape and Super DLTtape (SDLT) is a major competitor to the LTO format. Quantum recently released specifications for an upgraded version of SDLT that will support 320GB compressed or 160GB native. Drives based on the upgrade will be available later this year.
