Let's get ready to litigate! The lawsuits begin

Predictably, the first of what promises to be a swarm of lawsuits against Microsoft Corporation was filed this week in New York, charging that the software giant overcharged for its Windows 98 operating system.

The lawsuit was filed in New York City by Seastrom Associates Ltd, which is seeking class action status to represent thousands of New Yorkers. Analysts say that such lawsuits will drive Microsoft to settlement, as they could eventually cost the company billions of dollars.

"From what we hear it appears to be a groundless lawsuit, especially when the Windows operating system is priced less than our competitors," a Microsoft spokesperson said, admitting that the company had not yet seen the suit
