Intel launches the mobile Pentium II

Intel Corporation formally launched its mobile Pentium II microprocessor (code-named "Tillamook") today, introducing 233 and 266 MHz versions of the chip. Mobile Pentium II CPUs run at about 8 watts, compared to 5 watts for a Pentium MMX, so they will run hotter and consume battery life more quickly than their slower predecessors. Still, Pentium II laptops will run about 30-35% more quickly, pushing mobile computing into true "desktop replacement" territory for the first time.

All major mobile computer vendors, including Toshiba, Digital, Gateway, Dell, and others are introducing Pentium II laptops this month, with prices falling into the $2500-6000 range.
