FTC probes Intel

The Federal Trade Commission has launched a probe of Intel, to determine whether the microprocessor superpower was acting "to monopolize, attempt to monopolize, or otherwise restrict price or non-price competition in the development or sale of microprocessors or other computer components or related intellectual property."  Intel controls 85% of the microprocessor market. The company said in a statement that it would comply with the government's request for information. In the late 1980's, Intel was investigated for similar reasons but no action was taken.

Today, however, Digital Equipment Corporation and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), two of Intel's chief rivals, were given subpoenas from the FTC. Digital confirmed that it also received a civil investigate demand related to the case. Digital is cooperating with the investigation, naturally
