Dell invests in Red Hat, to support Linux

PC hardware heavyweight Dell Computer has taken an equity stake in Red Hat Software, makers of Red Hat Linux, and agreed to install the Linux operating system on a number of its PCs. Previously, Dell would install Linux only on large orders from major customers but this change of heart--and the deal with Red Hat--signifies a major change in Dell's support of Linux, the UNIX-like open source operating system. Dell will be installing and supporting Red Hat Linux on its Precision Workstations and PowerEdge servers, effective immediately.
