AMD set to release Pentium Pro/Pentium II competitor

Advanced Micro Designs (AMD) will launch its K6 processor tomorrow, a chip the company claims bests the Pentium Pro and Pentium II in performance. The K6 ushers in a new era of Intel-compatible competition as previous releases by AMD and Cyrix have been underwhelming. The initial K6 CPU will run at 200 Mhz and fits in a standard Pentium motherboard while performing faster than comparable 200 Mhz Pentium Pro CPUs. The chip is based on technology by the former NextGen Corporation, which was bought by AMD last year. It features full compatibility with existing Intel x86 CPUs the MMX multimedia technology
