VMware’s vSphere continues to hold a strong lead in the enterprise virtualization space and the new release of vSphere 6.0 has enabled vSphere to continue hold a technological lead over Microsoft’s Hyper-V. Released on June 19th 2015, vSphere 6.0 brings a number of important enhancements to the enterprise:

Greater host and cluster scalability – With the vSphere 6.0 release VMware has one again leap frogged Hyper-V and boosted their maximum host and VM scalability. vSphere hosts now supports up 480 CPUs and a maximum of 12 TB of host RAM. The maximum cluster nodes have also been increased to 64.

Greater guest VM scalability – Like you might expect, VM scalability has been significantly enhanced in the vSphere 6.0 release as well. VM’s can now support a maximum of 128 vCPUs and a maximum of 4 TB of VM RAM.

Virtual SAN enhancements – The new release of vSphere has also been accompanied by a new version of their Virtual SAN product. Virtual SAN enables you to create a combine storage from multiple vSphere hosts. The new release includes support for all-flash configurations, 90K IOPs per host for all-flash configurations, 32 snapshots per VM and 64 node host clusters configurations.

NIVDIA Grid Support – The new NVIDIA Grid support enables the graphics commands of each virtual machine to be passed through directly to the host GPU without translation by the hypervisor. This enables the GPU hardware to deliver maximum graphics performance for VDI and graphics intensive VMs.

vCenter enhancements – With the new vSphere 6.0 release vCenter Server services like VMware vCenter Inventory Service and the vSphere Web Client are installed automatically along with vCenter Server. The vCenter Appliance also now has the same scalability as the Windows Server implementation.
