Q. What are key antivirus scanning exclusions for Windows Virtual PC and Microsoft Enterprise Desktop Virtualization (MED-V)?

A. The normal rules of not scanning the Virtual Hard Disk (VHD), Virtual PC Undo disk (VUD), Virtual PC Saved State (VSV) and Virtual Machine Configuration (VMC) files apply to Virtual PC and MED-V environments. (MED-V uses Virtual PC).

In addition to the exclusions above, you should also exclude the following for optimal MED-V operation:

  • .CKM—Packed version of the image used by MED-V.
  • .INDEX—Index file used by the TrimTransfer feature.
  • .EVHD—Encrypted VHD files used by MED-V clients running workspaces.
