A. Yes, and this is actually required as part of the best practice upgrade process. When you want to migrate from ESX 3.5 to ESX 4, the upgrade order is:
- Upgrade vCenter to version 4.
- Upgrade vCenter Update Manager.
- Upgrade the ESX hosts.
- Upgrade VMTools and VM Hardware for the virtual machines.
As you can see, as part of the upgrade order, you have to manage the ESX 3.5 servers from the version 4 vCenter.
Note that vCenter Server 4 actually supports ESX 2.5.x, 3.0.1 and above, 3.5 and 4. This can be confirmed in VMware's compatibility matrix.
