Q. I'm updating a Microsoft Application Virtualization (App-V) virtual application using the App-V 4.6 SP1 sequencer. Do I have to launch updates using the Run button on the Installation screen?

A. One of the great features of virtualized applications with App-V is the ease of updating them. Instead pushing application updates to every desktop, you just open the existing virtualized application in the App-V sequencer for update and apply the updates. Those changes to the virtualized applications are pulled down by App-V users the next time they launch the applications.

If you select a custom installation during the update, the Installation screen shown below will have a Run button to launch updates.

You don't have to launch the updates or applications you want to apply using the Run button. The App-V sequencer is monitoring everything happening on the system. The only difference when using Run is that the sequencer is running as Administrator. So if you launch via the Run button, you'll need see UAC elevation prompts. Functionally, however, there's no difference in updating your virtualized application.
