Hyper-V requirements for Windows Server 2016

Q. What are the requirements for Hyper-V in Windows Server 2016?

A. There is one major change for Hyper-V requirements with Windows Server 2016 above those in Windows Server 2012 R2 and that is the need for secondary level address translation (SLAT). In Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2 Hyper-V SLAT is only required when using RemoteFX but with Windows Server 2016 Hyper-V will not work in any deployment without SLAT capable processors. Additionally the processors must support the VM Monitor Mode extentions. These new requirement are outlined at https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/mt608570.aspx. The complete list of requirements for the processor are:

  • 64-bit processor
  • SLAT support
  • VM Monitor Mode extensions
  • Hardware-assisted virtualization (Intel VT or AMD-V)
  • Hardware-enforced Data Execution Prevention (DEP which is Intel XD or AMD NX)

Windows Server 2012 R2 requirements are outlined at https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh831531.aspx.
