==== 1. Ask the Experts: Calculating the Disk Space Necessary for Exchange
Transaction Logs ====
by Paul Robichaux, [email protected]

Q: How much disk space do you need to reserve for Exchange Server transaction logs?

A: The required disk space depends on how many logs per day (or week or month) the workload on your server generates. Exchange transaction logs have a fixed size (5MB), so you can easily estimate how many logs will fit into a given amount of space. Simply divide the space by 5,242,880 (1024 x 1024 x 5, or exactly 5MB). Because online and Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) backups truncate the log files, you probably don't need a huge amount of space available. You need enough space to allow for log accumulation between backups, plus a reasonable reserve. Most servers will generate no more than a few hundred log files per day. You can easily see how many are generated on a typical day by performing a full or incremental backup, waiting for a day, then counting the number of generated logs.

MiraLink Tool Helps Determine Disaster Recovery Needs
by Blake Eno, [email protected]

Building a disaster recovery solution for an organization involves a number of steps. Additionally, the costs associated with DR preparation aren't measured only in terms of dollars but education as well. MiraLink ( http://www.miralink.com ) aims to help customers take their first crucial step in disaster recovery preparation by offering a simple, easy-to-use solution that helps them evaluate whether their sites are candidates for data protection through remote mirroring. The solution, called Data Rate Management Log (DRML), which first started as an internal MiraLink project, is a software tool for network administrators in small-to-midsized businesses (SMBs) and enterprises. Priced at just under $100, the tool monitors drive usage and ascertains the rate of data change on a server. DRML uses the information it obtains to determine whether a remote-mirrored disaster recovery solution is feasible by estimating the bandwidth required for remote mirroring. After collecting data for one week by using DRML, users can review the results in graphs and statistics. Per MiraLink, administrators can use the information to help them choose a MiraLink real-time data-mirroring product or to aid in capacity planning for servers, networks, and storage arrays. And, according to Ron McCabe, president and CEO of MiraLink, DRML users can send their results to MiraLink for step-by-step analysis (MiraLink provides the first consulting session free of charge).
