Q. How can I copy Windows Server 2003 R2 File Server Resource Manager (FSRM) templates between servers?

A. Currently, there's no way to use the GUI to copy templates between servers, but you can use command-line tools to export and import templates. For example, to export a specific file-screening template, use the datascrn.exe command-line utility, as the following example shows (use dirquota.exe to export quota templates):

C:\>filescrn template export /file:e:\filescreenmp3.xml /template:"Block MP3"

To import the template, substitute import for export with the same syntax, as this example shows:


C:\>filescrn template import /file:e:\filescreenmp3.xml /template:"Block MP3"

Note that you can use the /remote switch to import a template to or from a remote server.

If a file screen operates on nonstandard file groups, you need to export and import them also or the file groups the template references won't exist on the target server. You do this via the "filescrn filegroup" export and import command using the same format as we used to import and export templates.

Q. How can I change the 60-minute flood setting for Windows Server 2003 R2 File Server Resource Manager (FSRM) templates?

A. The 60-minute flood setting limits the system to performing actions associated with a quota or file screen to once an hour no matter how many violations of the quota or file screen occur. The simplest way to modify the setting is to export the template to XML, as explained in the FAQ "How can I copy Windows Server 2003 R2 File Server Resource Manager (FSRM) templates between servers?" (http://www.windowsitpro.com/windowsnt20002003faq/Article/ArticleID/53917/windowsnt20002003faq_53917.html ); modify the RunLimitInterval value in the FileGroupActions section to the number of minutes for flooding, as the figure shows; then import the template with the new run limit in place.

If you set the RunLimitInterval to 0, there will be no suppression of actions, which in the case of email, might result in the user being flooded with violation messages.

Q. How can I use Windows Live OneCare to check my system status?

A. When you use the Windows Live OneCare service, an icon in the notification tray will appear either red (computer is at risk), orange (status fair but requires some actions) or green (good), as the figure shows.

If you double-click the OneCare icon, the main management interface will launch and display any items that you need to address. Or you can trigger manual actions such as an antivirus or spyware scan, as the figure shows.

You can click "View or change settings" in the left pane under "Other Tasks" to configure options such as how often to run the system tune-up; set backup prompts; enable antivirus, antispyware, and firewall functionality; and set logging options. Q. How can I force a net use command to remember the credentials to use for a server?

A. Ordinarily, you're prompted for credentials when you access a remote server that's outside of your regular account domain. However, if you use the /savecred switch with the net use command, it will prompt for the credentials to use and store the credentials for any future connection, as the following example shows:


net use * \\savdaldc02\temp /savecred

Q. How can I use a script to add email addresses to a distribution group in Active Directory (AD)?

A. The following script, which you can download at http://www.windowsitpro.com/articles/download/addtodg.zip , will add email addresses to a distribution group. In the script, the first LDAP path is the location where the contacts will be created; you need to change it to a valid path for your environment. The second LDAP path is the distinguished name (DN) of the distribution group to which the contact will be added.
