Launch Events: A Free Lunch by Brian Moran, [email protected]
Eleven days and counting to the biggest SQL Server release of all time. Are you going to one of the official Microsoft launch events? Microsoft does launch events all the time. I've known for months and months that Microsoft would sponsor multiple launch events for SQL Server 2005. But it wasn't until recently that I had a good sense of how BIG Microsoft was trying to make these events. Many of the larger events expect more than 3000 attendees, and I've heard that some events are expecting as many as 5000 people. I guess there's plenty of money in the party budget when you haven't shipped for a while.
The events are free, but will feature some great content. Many of the events will also include speakers from the SQL Server development team. And every event has been stocked with top-notch speakers and a large number of people at "Ask the Experts" booths to field questions about the new release.
3000+ attendees at an event might sound like a lot of open spaces, but you might have to hurry to get a spot. The first launch event, scheduled for November 7 in San Francisco, is already full. Detroit is full too. But the last time I checked, the other cites still had availability.
Perhaps you're somewhat new to SQL Server land? I've been waiting for SQL Server 2005 for quite a while, and I'm excited that launch time has finally arrived. Of course, it's just my luck to live outside of Washington DC, which is where the very LAST launch event is scheduled, so I'm stuck waiting until January 11 to attend the big party.
Don't live near one of the 15 major launch events? Don't fret--there are almost 40 smaller events scattered around the United States (I'll update you on international events as I learn about them), and you can find information about them at http://lists.sqlmag.com/t?ctl=17C8E:285886 .

On October 23, Microsoft revealed that it would add its business intelligence (BI) technologies into the next version of Microsoft Office, currently known as Office 12 and due in late 2006. Additionally, next month the company will release a new BI server product, called Microsoft Office Business Scorecard Manager 2005 and code-named Maestro.
"One way to increase the impact that people can have in an organization is to give them access to the information they need," said Jeff Raikes, president of the Microsoft Business Division. "Until now, BI software has been too complex, costly, and disconnected from the software tools people use every day to do their jobs. But the investments we're making in Microsoft Office, from significant extensions in existing products such as Excel and SharePoint, to new server investments such as the Office Business Scorecard Manager, will make BI and the business insights gleaned from it more pervasive, thereby enhancing the impact of people throughout an organization, which leads to greater overall business success."
New BI connectivity features in Office 12 will maintain persistent connections between Excel spreadsheets and server-based data sources. New server-based Excel functionality, called Excel Services, will help users "secure, share, and manage spreadsheets" on the server and let users view spreadsheets either in a Web browser or locally on the PC desktop. And new SharePoint/SharePoint Portal features will help users easily create Web dashboards that combine data and charts from numerous back-end data sources.
Microsoft says that these new BI features, coupled with Microsoft's historically low prices and mainstream availability, will fundamentally change the BI landscape, making it a collaborative, rather than individual, activity. Previously, businesses had to perform complex and costly BI activities outside of the usual business process structure. BI competitors, such as SAP and Oracle, however, note that Microsoft is late to the game, while offering fewer features.

I have a string column in a Fact table that I want to show up in my MDX queries. Although I'd normally use member properties for this functionality, because of a data warehousing consideration, I can't go that route. How can I get the column into MDX as a string so that it will show up as a string in my analysis cubes?

To debug a T-SQL stored procedure in SQL Server 2000, you use Query Analyzer. You simply right-click the stored procedure and choose Debug. In SQL Server 2005, SQL Server Management Studio replaces Query Analyzer. It's logical to assume that to debug a T-SQL stored procedure in SQL Server 2005, you simply right-click a stored procedure and select Management Studio's debug feature. Unfortunately, it's not that straightforward. A debug option is nowhere to be found. Give Users Access to Analysis Services Cubes
