Late last year, in November, Microsoft promised to end the confusion and frustration around having two very different communications products, Lync and Skype. Sometime in 2015 Lync and Skype would merge. Well, that 'sometime' is just around the corner.
In a video posted to Microsoft's Skype for Business Facebook page, Zi Serafin, Corporate Vice President for Skype Business Services, has invited everyone to join him in announcing the product merge. The announcement will come during a keynote at Enterprise Connect on March 18 at 10am ET. You can also follow @SkypeBusiness on Twitter for live event updates.
Personally, I can't begin to tell you what an important move this is. I've had two meetings this week where some wanted to use Skype, some Lync, and others Join.Me. Our company standard is Lync with the infrastructure to match and you would think that would be enough, but it still confuses people because people like what they like.
Lync Online will be updated automatically with the new Skype for Business branding, but those companies with on-premises implementations will need to rollout the update manually.
