Service Pack 1 for SharePoint 2010 Arrives

Microsoft releasedService Pack 1 for SharePoint 2010.  It has an interesting mix of features including support for a Microsoft product still in code-name stage and re-introduction of a feature that was taken away in SharePoint 2010.

The Microsoft SharePoint Team blog says it is “strongly recommended” that you install the June 2011 Cumulative Update “immediately after the installation of Service Pack 1. The June Cumulative Update includes several important security and bug fixes that are not included Service Pack 1.”  Here’s what’s included in SharePoint 2010 SP1:

Denali. SQL Server “Denali” support has been added. SQL Server 2008 and SQL Server 2005 were already supported, of course.

Shallow copy. If you’re using Remote BLOB storage (RBS), SP1’s support for shallow copy lets you update pointers to objects in the destination content database. (Shallow copy is the movement of structured site collection data across content databases without touching the unstructured data in the BLOB store.) The Windows PowerShell cmdlet Move-SPSite is what you use to do this.

Site Recycle Bin. Recovers deleted site collections and sites. Similar to that of the Recycle Bin for lists, libraries, and documents.

StorMan.aspx. Removed in SharePoint 2010, the StorMan.aspx page has been improved and added to SP1. It lets users see what is using up their storage quota to enable them to better manage their sites.

Cascading Filters in PerformancePoint Services. Cascading filter support in SP1 means that now you can pass the value of one filter to another.

IE and Chrome Browser Support. SP1 provides support for Internet Explorer 9 in Internet Explorer 8 Standards Mode and also provides support for the Google Chrome browser.

Accumulated Cumulative Updates. SP1 also includes all Cumulative Updates through the April 2011 Cumulative Update. To learn more about what is included, check out the Microsoft whitepaper on SharePoint 2010 SP1.
