Coinciding with the release of Exchange Server 2007, Microsoft released Forefront Security for Exchange Server. The product is based on Sybari's Antigen for Exchange, which Microsoft acquired in February 2005. The solution integrates numerous scanning engines from leading anti-malware vendors, including Kaspersky Labs, Computer Associates, and Sophos. The multi-engine approach mirrors long-standing best practices of using multiple security products to detect the widest range of potential threat. The approach also provides better uptime and availability of security services.
Gartner estimates that Microsoft products are used for approximately half of all corporate email accounts. According to a published report, Gartner thinks that "Exchange has the potential to set the direction for the e-mail market." Such penetration and power to steer the market is undoubtedly hinged on Microsoft's ability to better secure email, which makes Forefront for Exchange Server pivotal for Microsoft.
