In a stroke of, errr - cough - genius, Ericsson AB has a new modem that can "send a signal that completely disables the computer, making it impossible to turn on."
The premise here is that if a company sells someone a laptop and that person fails to make payments then the company could completely disable the laptop - thereby turning it into an extremely ugly paperweight destined to clog a landfill near you.
The problems here are numerous. Operational mistakes will be made that affect innocent users. Intruders will interfere by attacking through holes in the technology. And so on.
