Click-to-Run Tool for Customized Office 2013 Installations

Historically, click-to-run installations for Office 2013 didn't offer much in the way of control and customization. By default, these types of installations would simply download the full Office product with default settings that couldn't be altered, including delivering updates automatically.

Prior to click-to-run, Microsoft has always provided customization options, allowing administrators to adapt Office products to the needs of the organization and deliver specialized settings and features. These abilities evolved over time. Originally, administrators needed a working knowledge of the intricacies of the MSI database fields to make adjustments, but new tools came along, particularly from third parties that made the process easier. Microsoft also adjusted the installation technology so that most times just simple command-line switches could be used to supply a personalized installation.

Administrators have become very familiar with Office product deployments. But, click-to-run sort of threw a huge wrench into a known process.

To help bring back some level of customization, Microsoft has delivered a special click-to-run tool called: Office Deployment Tool for Click-to-Run. The tool provides similar capabilities for what administrators are already comfortable with. These include:

  • Download an Office installation source to a network share location

  • Configure an installation to use a network share as the installation source instead of the Internet

  • Configure an installation to suppress all UI

  • Configure the logging for an installations

  • Configure whether Office will automatically update or not

  • Configure which products and languages to install

  • Remove Office Click-to-Run products

The tool is available from Microsoft's Download Center: Office Deployment Tool for Click-to-Run

The download contains two files, a configuration.xml file…

…and a CMD-based, setup.exe application.
