1. COMMENTARY

  • CALLING ALL READERS

  • (contributed by Brian Moran, news editor, [email protected])

Time flies when you're having fun! This is the 172nd SQL Server Magazine UPDATE commentary I've written, and it occurs to me that I haven't asked for reader input in ages. So this week, I'm not going to share any SQL Server news with you, and I'm not going to wax poetic (or not so poetic) about a SQL Server topic that's dear to my heart. Instead, I'm asking you to do two things.

First, tell me how I'm doing with this commentary. Do you like it? Would you like me to cover different kinds of topics? Would you like more technical information? More news coverage? More opinion? Tell me what you think.

Second, tell me what you think is interesting in the world of SQL Server and databases in general. What's your latest pet peeve? What are you passionate about as a database professional? What interesting trends do you see developing?

Email is free, so don't be afraid to write. I'm sure that each of you has dozens of interesting thoughts and ideas. I might write about some individually; I might combine some with the thoughts and ideas of other readers. Some will create dialogues that we can examine in future commentaries. Let's see where your input can take us.

    2. SQL SERVER NEWS AND VIEWS

  • ACCELERATOR FOR BI ADDS 2 TEMPLATES

  • igence (Accelerator for BI), an application-development tool that lets you automate the process of building an analytical application. The two new templates are for Financial Services and Manufacturing. Retail and Sales and Marketing templates have been available since May.

The Financial Services template provides a predefined schema, key performance indicators, and a model for gathering requirements to build analytical applications for the banking industry. The model lets you analyze sales-channel effectiveness, profitability, and companywide finances.

The Manufacturing template provides a model for shop-floor operational analysis. The model lets you evaluate the cause of high labor costs, find opportunities to reduce production costs, and identify when you need to service equipment.

Accelerator for BI, based on SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services, provides support, tools, and best practices for building BI applications. The custom analytics builder lets you add your own intellectual property and services to applications. Accelerator for BI and the new templates are free to licensed SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition users and are available for download at
    http://www.microsoft.com/solutions/bi .

  • MICROSOFT POSTS NEW DEVELOPER RESOURCES

  • Microsoft has posted new Web resources that provide useful information for SQL Server developers. " Building Secure ASP.NET Applications" provides a practical approach to designing and building secure ASP.NET applications for Windows 2000 and the .NET Framework 1.0. The authors developed the recommendations and sample code in the guide using Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 1.0. They validated their design on servers running Windows 2000 Advanced Server Service Pack 3 (SP3), .NET Framework SP2, and SQL Server 2000 SP2.

The article "Performance Comparison: Security Design Choices" applies to SQL Server 2000 and SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition SP2. The author compares the relative performance of various security options available for client authentication, hashing algorithms, cryptography techniques, and digital signatures.

And for those of you who work with PivotTable reports, the article "Programming PivotTable Reports in Microsoft Access 2002" presents basic information about the elements of a PivotTable report and describes how to programmatically build and manipulate PivotTable reports in Microsoft Access 2002.

  • DOWNLOAD THE LATEST SQL SERVER 7.0 SP4 SECURITY UPDATE

  • Microsoft has provided an updated release of its security update for SQL Server 7.0 Service Pack 4 (SP4). The article " INF: SQL Server 7.0 Security Update for Service Pack 4" (Q327068) says that the security update now includes a previously reported fix that prevents an attacker from running existing Web tasks in the context of the creator of the Web task or inserting his own Web tasks into the SQL Server system.

  • RESULTS OF PREVIOUS INSTANT POLL: DATA ACCESS

  • The voting has closed in SQL Server Magazine's nonscientific Instant Poll for the question, "What is the primary data API you use for accessing SQL Server?" Here are the results (+/- 1 percent) from the 562 votes:
    • 15% ADO.NET
    • 41% ADO
    • 19% OLE DB
    • 23% ODBC
    • 3% DBLIB

  • NEW INSTANT POLL: LOCKING PROBLEMS

  • The next Instant Poll question is "When do you most often experience locking problems?" Go to the SQL Server Magazine Web site and submit your vote for 1) When running reports, 2) When accessing and modifying data through applications, 3) When running ad hoc queries through Query Analyzer, 4) Always, or 5) Never.

SPONSOR: FREE GEO-CLUSTERS PAPER FROM UNISYS

FREE EXPERT ADVICE: Don't neglect your SQL database servers when it comes to availability and business continuity. Especially for applications that need data around the clock or around the world — especially your Internet based ones. And with security such a vital issue today, dispersing clustered Windows-based servers across distances is the optimal solution. Experienced designer/engineers at Unisys show you how to do it successfully in this detailed, comprehensive white paper on Geographically Dispersed Clusters.

    5. RESOURCES

  • WHAT'S NEW IN SQL SERVER MAGAZINE: CHECK IT OUT

  • For accuracy and performance, you need to make sure that all IP addresses in your tables are valid. You can validate character strings containing IP addresses by using a CHECK constraint. Itzik Ben-Gan shows you how to write this constraint in his article "CHECK It Out," which appears in the November 2002 issue of SQL Server Magazine and is available online at
    http://www.sqlmag.com/articles/index.cfm?articleid=26728

  • HOT THREAD: RESTORING A LOG TO A SPECIFIC TIME

  • Cchitanu2000 is using Enterprise Manager to restore a database transactional log and wants to restore the log to a specific time: 9:42. He has logs at 9:30, 9:45, and 10:00, but when he specifies recovery at 9:42, he gets the error message "The time specified is less than the minimum point in time allowed." Can cchitanu2000 restore to exactly the time he wants? Offer your advice and read other users' >suggestions on the SQL Server Magazine forums at the following URL:
    http://www.sqlmag.com/forums/messageview.cfm?catid=3&threadid=10066

  • TIP: CREATING AND LOADING UPDATE FILES

  • (contributed by Microsoft's SQL Server Development Team, [email protected])

    Q. I need to load refreshed data daily to my client database located at a remote site. I prefer to bundle an update file and transfer it through FTP to the remote site so that DBAs there can run it and update their database. Can SQL Server create and load this type of update file instead of doing direct replication?

    A. You have two options for creating and loading the file, depending on what works best with your system. You can set up snapshot replication and choose the FTP option to deliver the snapshot. Here's the procedure. After you set up the publication, go to the Publication Properties dialog box, then to the Snapshot Location tab. Select the "Generate Snapshots in the following location" option and the "Subscribers can access this folder using FTP" option. You can create a pull subscription to this publication and download the snapshot through FTP.

Alternatively, you can use Data Transformation Services (DTS), which you can access through Enterprise Manager. This tool includes an FTP task and other options that let you FTP the file, load it into SQL Server, validate its contents, and apply the updates to the system. However, with DTS, you need to handle updates, inserts, and deletes yourself, something that replication does for you.

Send your technical questions to [email protected].

    6. NEW AND IMPROVED

(contributed by Carolyn Mader, [email protected])

  • QUICKLY CHANGE YOUR WORKSTATIONS, SERVERS, AND DCs
