  • RTM at Last!

  •     by Brian Moran, [email protected]

You've probably heard by now: Last Thursday, October 27, Microsoft announced the SQL Server 2005 release to manufacturing (RTM). MSDN Universal subscribers can download SQL Server 2005 at http://lists.sqlmag.com/t?ctl=18775:285886 .

Last week in "Launch Events: A Free Lunch" ( http://lists.sqlmag.com/t?ctl=18768:285886 ), I talked about what a big deal Microsoft is making of the launch events for SQL Server 2005, Visual Studio 2005, and BizTalk Server 2006. One of the reasons for the excitement about these launches is that, after a longer-than-expected wait, we finally get to enjoy the fruits of Microsoft's work over the past few years. Microsoft's "Better Together" theme, which the company has been using to promote these new releases, is now a reality. The integrated features of these three products are designed to help database professionals, developers, and end users work better together, and the new tools we have will fundamentally change the way we all work with data.

I'll have plenty of interesting thoughts and ideas to share about specific aspects of SQL Server 2005 in the coming weeks and months, but this week, I feel that less is more. All I really want to say today is congratulations to the SQL Server team and all the folks at Microsoft who have poured their hearts and souls into this product over the past 5 years. Job well done.

P.S. I hear the next release of SQL Server is codenamed Katmai. So, when does that ship?

  • Hot Tip: Granular Timing Statistics from Profiler

  •     by Brian Moran, [email protected]

SQL Server Profiler is a great tool for analyzing performance, but I never see CPU or duration values between 0 and 10ms--zero shows up and ten shows up, but nothing in between. Is there a way to get more granular timing for online transaction processing (OLTP) systems that do a massive number of fast queries?

  • Boost SQL Server Performance

  • Quickshift announced Quickshift for Microsoft SQL Server, software that helps you increase performance for crucial business applications by optimizing data movement between your server's processor, memory, and storage subsystems. The product uses a virtual buffer cache to make data movement more efficient, and employs a unique set of patented algorithms that intelligently determine what data should reside in the cache. The product installs in minutes and is invisible to user applications and the OS. The UI makes the product easy to administer. Pricing for Quickshift starts at $999 per processor for the Standard Edition, and volume discounts are available. To learn more, contact Quickshift at 512-342-0474 or [email protected].

  • Secure Column-Level Data

  • NetLib announced its Column Encryption Manager for Netlib Encryptionizer. Col-E for SQL Server lets you encrypt selected data columns so that you can protect specific data such as salaries, PINs, credit card numbers, and other sensitive data in your SQL Server 2000, 7.0, and Microsoft Access databases. The product lets you select columns to encrypt and determine who has read access to the encrypted columns. The product automatically maintains encryption integrity and keeps encryption keys separate from the data they protect. Repeating Values Protection (RVP), an additional feature, lets you deploy the product in as little as a few hours and adds an additional layer of security on top of Windows and SQL Server security. The product doesn't increase your database size and is transparent to most existing applications. Encryptionizer for SQL Server is licensed per-server and must be installed on each server in a cluster. Volume pricing and OEM licensing is available. Free, time-limited evaluation versions are available, and pricing for Netlib Col-E is available on request at 800-480-1604, 203 321-1278, or through the vendor's Web site.
