Email Giants Launch Spam Lawsuits

The world's hatred of spam email was clear last week, when several Internet giants teamed up to file six joint lawsuits in the United States against hundreds of spammers. The companies, which include America Online (AOL), Earthlink, Microsoft, and Yahoo, are using a recently passed law called the Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography and Marketing (Can-Spam) Act. The companies argue that the spammers they're targeting are misleading consumers and illegally sending unsolicited email. The lawsuits should be a good first test of the new law and will hopefully help put a dent—even a small one—in spammers' operations.
