Q: Can I install the System Center Operations Manager agent in virtual machines in Azure IaaS and monitor them?
A. Yes. A virtual machine (VM) running in Windows Azure IaaS is essentially just a VM running an OS, and you can install the System Center Operations Manager agent within the guest OS and treat it like any other system. As with any other remote location, there would be considerations that you would need to make sure are covered:
- Communication. Can the Operations Manager Management Server communicate with the Operations Manager agents? This means either enabling a site-to-site VPN between your intranet and Azure network or ensuring the right ports are open between the Operations Manager Management Server and the agents.
- Authentication. Are the Azure IaaS VMs part of the domain allowing Kerberos or will you need to use certificates? Another option would be to install an Operations Manager Gateway in Azure network, which could use Kerberos to talk to the IaaS VMs, and then the gateway would use certificates to talk to the on-premises Operations Manager Management Server.
Remember that Operations Manager also has other types of monitoring for Azure available, beyond just agents running inside VMs.
