Windows Phone 8.1 Tip: Use Reading View in IE 11

A better way to read the mobile web

Windows Phone 8.1's new web browser has a number of interesting features, including some that will be familiar to those who use Internet Explorer 11 in Windows 8.1. One of my favorites is Reading View, which makes an average web article or blog post much easier to read.

And as you'd expect, Reading View works a lot like it does in Windows 8.1: Just navigate to a new article, blog post or other similar page, and you'll see a new Reading View button appear in the right side of the address bar.

Note: Reading View works in both landscape and portrait mode. And it works with both desktop- and mobile-oriented web sites.

And as with its bigger brother, IE 11 Mobile lets you customize Reading View settings. Oddly, you cannot do so while using Reading View, however. From a normal IE display, choose More (the "..." button next to the address bar) and then Settings. In the Settings screen that appears, scroll all the way down to the bottom and tap the Advanced Settings button. At the bottom of the Advanced Settings screen, you'll see options related to Reading View.

These options mirror those in IE 11 in Windows 8.1 and include:

Font size. Use the slider to change the size of the text in Reading View.

Style. Tap the box under "Reading view style" to choose between bright, medium, light and dark styles.

You can see how these changes impact Reading View using the preview display. And as you might expect, it's possible to change the display quite a bit.

Enjoy!
