Q. Why does the Windows 2003 R2 File Server Resource Manager (FSRM) file screen audit report contain three entries for file screen violations?

A. When you run a file screen violation audit report, you'll most likely notice most violations have three entries when only one attempt was made to write the illegal file type, as the sample report shows.

This glitch isn't a fault of the file-screening audit but rather a side-effect of the way most interfaces into the file system, including Explorer and the command shell, work. When a write or rename attempt fails, the shell will retry three times. Therefore, you'll see three entries in the file screen report.

Q. What is a file screen exception in Windows 2003 R2 File Server Resource Manager (FSRM)?

A. In previous FAQs, I discussed using file screens to block a certain type of file (e.g., all audio and video). There might be times that you want to enable a certain file type, but only within a defined folder that allows granular control of where data can be placed. For example, if I had a file screen to block all audio and video (which includes the .mp3 file type), I could create a subfolder named MP3 and add an exception to all MP3 extensions in that folder. To do so, perform these steps:

Start the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) File System Resource Manager snap-in (Start, Programs, Administrative Tools, File Server Resource Manager).
Expand the File Screening Management branch and select File Screens.
Click Create File Screen Exception in the Actions pane
Click Browse and select the path to which the file screen exception should be applied. You can then select the template you want to derive the settings from or set specific values by clicking Create, which lets you specify file criteria for the new group type (e.g. *.mp3), as the figure shows.
Click OK.

The file screen detail will now show the exception, which takes precedence over blocks. For example, in the example that the figure shows, d:\users has a screen on all audio and video; however, the exception on the subfolder MP3 will take precedence, allowing .mp3 files to be written to the MP3 subfolder despite the file screen on its parent folder.

Q. Where can I download a standalone Windows Mobile 5 device emulator?

A. Emulators for Windows Mobile have been available for many years, however they've always required that you run Visual Studio or Windows Mobile/CE software development kits (SDKs). Microsoft has released a standalone emulator that you can download at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=C62D54A5-183A-4A1E-A7E2-CC500ED1F19A&displaylang=en . The emulator is useful for mobile testing without needing all the previous supporting requirements. You also need the Virtual Machine Network Driver, which lets the mobile device connect to your network. You'll download two files. Extract V1Emulator.zip and execute the standalone_emulator_V1.exe file. Then execute the downloaded efp.msi and follow the onscreen directions. After you install both files, you'll see a new program group called "Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0 MSFP Emulator Images" that contains a number of different images. For example, the PocketPC images provide a full Mobile 5 experience, and with the Virtual Machine Network Driver installed, it will access the Internet via your PC's network card, allowing Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) and the Outlook client to function. The figure shows the emulator accessing mail via Outlook Mobile Access (OMA). This is a great tool for testing your mobile device compatibility and documenting screen captures.

Q. How can I enable support for the Windows Mobile 5.0 Messaging and Security Feature Pack (MSFP) on Microsoft Exchange Server?

A. With Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2), Microsoft added a number of new features, including direct message push over HTTP (which differs from the previous notification functionality for new messages, which previously used a Short Message Service--SMS--notification); enhanced security options, such as forcing certain criteria for passwords and remote/local device wipe); and Global Address List (GAL) lookup. To take advantage of these capabilities the mobile devices must be running Windows Mobile 5 and have the MSFP installed. By default, when you install Exchange 2003 SP2, the new direct push features are enabled, but you can check their status by performing these steps:

Start Exchange System Manager (Start, Programs, Microsoft Exchange, System Manager).
Expand Global Settings.
Right-click Mobile Services and select Properties.
Ensure the correct options are enabled, as the figure shows. (Clicking Device Security lets you configure password options for devices.) Click OK.

Q. Users aren't receiving all the email alerts from file screen violations; they receive only one message for the first violation. Can I change that?

A. To avoid flooding the event log, program actions, mail messages, and reports by default actions associated with a file screen are performed only once an hour per user. It's possible to change the default of 60 minutes, but it requires that you create a custom configuration file and use it via the command line tools.
