What’s Right About NT 4.0 and What’s Wrong About NT 4.0

What's Right About NT 4.0

  • A new user interface (UI) that will make Windows 95 users feel right at home
  • A Domain Name System (DNS) Server and Manager for configuring DNS services
  • A built-in Web server, Internet Information Server (IIS)
  • A Web development tool, FrontPage, for setting up and publishing Web pages
  • Simplified IP routing between RAS and LAN connections
  • Multilink Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) and Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) for quick and easy connections to the Internet
  • Telephony Application Program Interface (TAPI) that unifies communications setup
  • A Network Monitor for viewing network information between servers and clients
  • A new setup Wizard, Setup Manager, that automates NT installation

What's Wrong About NT 4.0

  • The system can become unstable as a result of print and video drivers being trusted parts of the UI
  • Companies licensing NT 4.0 will have to pay $25 per client upgrade license, join Microsoft's Select plan, or hold out for NT 5.0
  • The NT setup program's faux Wizard makes it difficult to undo decisions made during earlier steps
  • The lack of documentation for the new features
