In what order do I install service packs?

A. Installation ordering can be tricky. Here's a simple heuristic: Install the OS service pack first, then the application’s service pack, then the OS service pack again. For example, on a Windows NT Server 4.0 system with Service Pack 5 (SP5) running Exchange Server 5.5 SP3, you should stop the Exchange Server 5.5 services, install NT 4.0 SP6a, reboot, install Exchange Server 5.5 SP4, reboot, and reinstall NT 4.0 SP6a before restarting the Exchange Server 5.5 services.
