Ubuntu 8.04 Unleashed

Canonical released Ubuntu 8.04 for desktops and servers, the latter of which ships with several new security tools and features.

Included as standard aspects of the current distribution are FreeRadius, Munin (a monitoring tool), OpenVPN, and Bacula backup software. Canonical said that Ubuntu 8.04 also includes enhanced security via an integrated firewall along with integrated AppArmor policies to control applications as well as added kernel hardening.

The new version ships with support for Active Directory, which is based on LikeWise Open, and is built with better support for virtualized environments and environments that rely on KVM switches.

"Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Server Edition is built for business," said Jane Silber, COO of Canonical Ltd. "This release brings together significant feature and stability improvements to a free and open platform. Ubuntu 8.04 LTS is at the center of a growing ecosystem of applications that serve businesses of all sizes extremely well.
