Sony Video Camera Takes HD Mainstream

Sony has been busy shipping ever-cheaper high-definition (HD) video cameras over the past 2 years, but this year, the company will finally ship a camcorder that is priced for consumers and yet provides true HD quality. The Sony HDR-HC3 will cost $1700, or about two to three times the cost of a typical DV camcorder. But consider the specifications: It supports both 1080i and 720p recording modes for the best possible picture quality and can output in crystal-clear HDMI. It can also take 4-megapixel still pictures. Best of all, the HDR-HC3 is small, no bigger than your average camcorder, and a far cry from the behemoth HD cameras the company is now selling. The HDR-HC3 will start shipping in April, Sony says. Welcome to the world of consumer-grade HD
