Q. A Windows Server 2003 terminal server crashes when 30 to 40 users use roaming profiles to log on to or log off the terminal server?

When 30 to 40 users that use roaming profiles log on or log off a Windows Server 2003 terminal server, the terminal server BSODs:

STOP 0x0000008E (c0000005, 7c82ed54, f45edd64, 00000000)

This behavior may occur if you removed the UPHCLean (User Profile Hive Cleanup) Service and a stale registry entry from a version earlier than 1.5 was not deleted.

To resolve this issue:

1. Use Control Panel / Add or Remove Programs to remove any version of UPHClean if it exists.

2. Open a CMD.EXE window.

3. Type the following command and press Enter:

REG DELETE HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\Legacy_uphclean /F
4. Restart the terminal server.
