Q. Windows Server 2003 SP1 (Service Pack 1) stops responding during startup?

After installing SP1, your Windows Server 2003 computer hangs on a black screen during startup.

This problem will occur if one of the disks has a 00000000 signature and the disk is read-only or write-disabled.

When the disk is enumerated by the Plug and Play manager, it puts an exclusive lock on the disk. When the Plug and Play manager tries to write a signature, it receives a STATUS_MEDIA_WRITE_PROTECTED error, causing the Plug and Play manager to add another work item. Since the disk is not released, a loop occurs.

To workaround this problem, add a signature to the disk before you make it read-only or write-disabled.

You may need to contact your hardware vendor.

NOTE: This behavior first started with the 886800 hotfix.
