Q. Will the next version of the Windows client after Windows 7 be 64-bit only?

A. There's no firm answer on this, but it's a common question given that Windows Server is going 64-bit only with Windows Server 2008 R2 and will remain so going forward.

The picture is different for clients, though. While most laptops and desktops now ship with 64-bit processors, new types of hardware such as netbooks have 32-bit processors and are very much being targeted as a platform for lower-end versions of Windows 7. It would be surprising if the next version of Windows drops support for these ultraportable devices so, it's not unrealistic to think Windows 8, or whatever it will be called, will also have a 32-bit version.
