Q. How can I repair Windows XP if Internet Explorer 7 is installed?

You cannot perform a repair installation of Windows XP if Internet Explorer 7 is installed. If you do, Internet Explorer will not work because the repair installation does not restore the earlier version files in the %ProgramFiles%\Internet Explorer folder resulting in an incompatibility with the Internet Explorer 6 files that the repair placed in the %SystemRoot%\System32 folder.

To uninstall Internet Explorer 7:

1. Start / Run / appwiz.cpl / OK.

2. Select Internet Explorer 7 and press Remove. If you can't find Internet Explorer 7:

            A. Install the Recovery Console.

            B. Restart you computer and start the Recovery Console.

            C. Type CD ie7\spuninst and press Enter.

            D. Type batch spuninst.txt and press Enter.

If SP2 is NOT installed and Internet Explorer 7 cannot be uninstalled:

1. Delete the %SystemRoot%\IE7 folder if it exists.

2. Perform a repair installation of Windows XP.

3. Make sure the Internet Explorer 6 is working.

4. Install SP2 for Windows XP.
