NT Gatekeeper: Disabling the NTLM Authentication Protocol

Our employees don't have Internet access, so their desktops don't need the NT LAN Manager (NTLM) authentication protocol for Web browsing. Can we disable the protocol in Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) 4.x?

Yes. To disable IE 4.x support for the NTLM authentication protocol, delete the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Security\NTLM registry subkey, then restart the computer. This change affects only the IE authentication options; after you apply the change, only the basic and anonymous HTTP authentication options will be available. For more information about NTLM authentication, see the Microsoft article "Disabling NTLM Authentication in Internet Explorer 4.x" (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=230703).
