McDATA and Adaptec Launch Relationship to Enhance SANs

McDATA and Adaptec have launched a strategic relationship that they hope will extend the capabilities of Internet SCSI (iSCSI) and Fibre Channel Storage Area Networks (SANs). As part of the agreement, McDATA will integrate Adaptec's storage router accelerator into its core-to-edge line of enterprise-solutions products. The addition of Adaptec's technology will extend Fibre Channel SANs over IP networks, allowing connections over long distances. Adaptec's storage router accelerator technology also is expected to support iSCSI-to-Fibre Channel conversion.

Adaptec's storage router accelerator architecture is scalable to 10GBs and converts Fibre Channel traffic to Gigabit Ethernet traffic using Fibre Channel Internet Protocol (FCIP) or Fibre Channel (FC)-to-iSCSI protocols. The integration of McDATA's products with Adaptec's storage router accelerator will let customers implement standards-based, high-performance, and highly reliable storage networks between remote locations.

"Critical applications such as business continuity and disaster recovery require geographically dispersed SANs to be interconnected. This solution protects our customers' investments in Fibre Channel while optimizing their Fibre Channel SAN resources. Once integration is complete and incorporated into our new products, customers will have a reliable and high performance solution for connecting to remote data centers or providing additional, long-distance access for remote hosts into the corporate data center, using iSCSI and FCIP. This further leverages the benefits of the customer's Fibre Channel SANs," said Richard Search, vice president of marketing for McDATA.
