Q. When I try to install Corel Paint Shop Pro X, the installation hangs when it tries to register the program's modules.

A. I recently had this same problem and also had similar problems in which the application was installed but would hang when it tried to start. The most common cause is a graphics card that uses the NVIDIA chipset. One workaround is to turn off all hardware acceleration. To do so, follow these steps:
1. Start the Display Control Panel applet (Start, Settings, Control Panel, Display).
2. Select the Settings tab and click the Advanced button.
3. Select the Troubleshoot tab.
4. Set the "Hardware acceleration" option to None and click OK to all open dialog boxes. The actual resolution, however, is to use the latest NVIDIA drivers (version 84.21 or above), which you can download from http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_84.21 .

Q. How do I uninstall the Client Services for Netware component?

A. Many readers have inquired about uninstalling the Client Services for Netware component, particularly to enable Windows XP's fast user-switching capability. Follow these steps to remove the Client Services for Netware component:
1. Open Network Connections (Start, Settings, Control Panel, Network Connections).
2. Right-click your connection (e.g., Local Area Connection) and select Properties.
3. Under "This connection uses the following items:" select "Client Services for Netware" and click Uninstall.
4. Click Yes to the displayed dialog box and reboot.

Functionality that was previously unavailable (e.g., fast user switching) will now be possible.

Q. Where can I get the 64-bit version of Group Policy Management Console (GPMC)?

A. There's currently no 64-bit version of GPMC, and the existing 32-bit version won't run on 64-bit platforms. You can run the 32-bit version remotely to manage Group Policy on 64-bit domain controllers (DCs), but this still requires 32-bit OSs on which to run the tool. Windows Vista will include both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of GPMC.

Q. How can I see the differences between two Group Policy Objects (GPOs)?

A. Desktop Standard provides a free add-on for the Group Policy Management Console (GPMC) that adds several new features, including change control, local GPO management, offline editing, and, relevant to this FAQ, differencing. You can download the tool at http://www.desktopstandard.com/GPOVaultFree.aspx . After downloading it, execute the gpovault.msi and follow the onscreen instructions to install the tool. Once installed, start the GPMC (Start, Programs, Administrative Tools, Group Policy Management) and perform these steps:
1. Expand the Forest - Domains and the domain and select the "Change Control" leaf.
2. In the details pane, select the Contents tab, which will display a list of GPOs. At this point, you probably need to select the "Uncontrolled" child tab to see your normal GPOs.
3. Select the GPOs for which you want to see the differences (hold down the Ctrl key as you select each GPO), then right-click and select Differences - HTML Report. (You can also select to output to XML format as the figure at http://www.windowsitpro.com/articles/images/gpmcdifferencelist1.gif shows.)
4. A report will display the differences between the selected GPOs, as the figure at http://www.windowsitpro.com/articles/images/gpmcdiffreportoutput.gif shows.

You can run the differences option between only two files at a time.
