JSI Tip 9985. How can I configure Windows XP for quick access to Power Management?

If your computer is ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface) compliant, or APM (Advanced Power Management) compliant, you can display the Power Meter in the notification area, for quick access to Power Management functions.

NOTE: If you computer is running on battery power, the default behavior is to display the Power Meter icon in the notification area.

To configure the Power Meter to always display in the notification area:

1. Start / Run / PowerCfg.cpl / OK.

2. Select the Advanced tab.

3. Check the Always show icon on the taskbar box.

4. Press Apply and OK.

To perform this configuration from the command-line, or in a batch file, use powercfg.exe:

To configure the Power Meter to always display in the notification area:

powercfg /globalpowerflag on /option:batteryicon

To configure the Power Meter to only show when on battery power:

powercfg /globalpowerflag off /option:batteryicon
