JSI Tip 9226. When you perform a CD-ROM based clean install of Windows XP or Windows Server 2003, the drive letter of the primary partition is incorrect?

When you perform a clean install of Windows XP, or Windows Server 2003, from the CD-ROM, Windows does NOT assigned the drive letter C: to the newly created partition.

This behavior will occur if you have a removable device, such as a USB Card Reader, or a Magneto-Optical disk connected to your computer during setup.

To workaround this behavior during the partition selection process:

1. Select the unpartitioned space and press C to create a partition.

2. Follow the on-screen instructions.

3. Select the new partition and press D to delete it.

4. Follow the on-screen instructions.

5. Select the unpartitioned space and press C to create a primary partition.

6. Follow the on-screen instructions.
