JSI Tip 8719. When you attempt to slipstream SP2 into an existing Windows XP distribution share, you receive 'This Service Pack cannot be integrated into a destination that also has integrated Software Updates'?

When you attempt to integrate (slipstream) Windows XP SP2 files into an existing Windows XP distribution share, you receive an error similar to:

This Service Pack cannot be integrated into a destination that also has integrated Software Updates. Consult the Service Pack documentation for more details about supported integration scenarios.

The behavior will occur if hotfix or security update files have already been integrated into the distribution share.

NOTE: See How do I slipstream hotfixes that replace pre-existing drivers?

To workaround this behavior:

1. Delete all the files and folders in the distribution share.

2. Copy your Windows XP CD-ROM to the distribution share.

3. Slipstream Service Pack 2.

4. Integrate any hotfix or security update that you desire.

NOTE: When you perform a slipstream, the %SystemRoot%\Spslpsrm.log file will record any error messages that are generated.
