JSI Tip 8676. Diskpart.exe does NOT extend system and boot partitions in Windows Server 2003 and in Windows XP?

The Diskpart.exe utility that is included in the subject operating systems does NOT let you extend the system and boot partitions into unallocated space. Dispart.exe only supports extension of data partitions.

When you attempt to extend the system or boot partition, you receive:

Diskpart failed to extend the volume. Please make sure the volume is valid for extending.

If you extend the system or boot partition using Dispart.exe from the Windows 2000 Resource Kit, the file system may not be extended, causing your computer to hang.

If you extend the system or boot partition using Dispart.exe from Windows XP SP1, it may also extend the partition, but the file system may not be extended, causing your computer to hang.

If you must extend the system or boot partition, use a 3rd party utility like Partition Magic or Server Magic.
