When you Scan for updates on the Windows Update site, Windows 98 and Windows 98 Second Edition updates are offered for your Windows XP-based computer.
This behavior will occur if the VersionNumber Value Name, a Windows 98 carry-over, lists the version number of Windows 98.
To resolve this behavior:
1. Use Regedit.exe to navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion.
2. Select the VersionNumber Value Name and press Delete on the Edit menu.
3. Press Yes to confirm the deletion.
4. Close the Registry Editor.
5. Shutdown and restart your computer.
6. Visit Windows Update and Scan for updates.
