JSI Tip 7828. When you convert a basic disk to a dynamic disk in Windows 2000, you must restart your computer twice?

When you convert a basic disk to a dynamic disk and restart your computer, you receive a Found new hardware message and you are requested to restart your computer again.

This behavior occurs because the first reboot replaces the basic boot volume device driver (Ftdisk.sys) with the dynamic volume driver Dmio.sys. You must restart again for PnP (Plug and Play) to install the boot dynamic volume device, which can't be installed while the volume is in use.

NOTE: If you fail to restart a second time, you will experience data loss and other unexpected behaviors.
