JSI Tip 7605. There is no drive letter on a mapped network drive, or long files names are not allowed?

You experience any of the following on Windows XP Professional:

  • When you attempt to open a mapped network drive, there is no drive letter in the Address bar.

  • When you attempt to create a folder, or file, with a long name, on a mapped network drive, you receive:

The drive that this file or folder is stored on does not allow long file names, or names containing blanks or any of the following characters: \ / : , ; * ? |

You cannot create the long-name file or folder on the mapped drive.

This problem can occur if you start Windows Explorer before the logon script finishes.

NOTE: See What is the Windows XP Professional Fast Logon Optimization feature?

To resolve this behavior, Enable the Always wait for the network at computer startup and logon policy at Computer Configuration \ Administrative Templates \ System \ Logon.

NOTE: See The 'Run logon scripts synchronously' policy does NOT work in Windows XP?
