JSI Tip 7292. The Windows 2000 Server Removable Storage service hangs on startup?

After installing Windows 2000 Server, your System Event log contains:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7022
Description: The Removable Storage service hung on starting.

This problem can be caused by a failure to completely install the Removable Storage service, or its' registry keys have become corrupted. The Removable Storage Manager (RSM) needs the %SystemRoot%\System32\NtmsData folder, and the service need the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\NtmsSvc registry key and sub-keys.

If you try to start the Removable Storage service manually, you receive a 1053 error code.

To fix this problem:

1. Use Windows Explorer to navigate to the %Systemroot%\INF\Rsm.inf file.

2. Right-click the Rsm.inf file and press Install.

3. Create a new folder named Ntmsdata in the %SystemRoot%\System32 folder.

4. Shutdown and restart the server.

NOTE: The following keys should have been created:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\NtmsSvc\Parameters
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\NtmsSvc\Config

NOTE: The following libraries should be registered when the RunOnce key is parsed during startup:

Ntmssvc.dll
Ntmsmgr.dll
Ntmsevt.dll
